Warrior Writers: Combat Paper

What is Combat Paper?

Combat Paper is paper made using uniforms worn while on tour during war. The uniforms are cut into pieces, cooked and macerated in a Hollander beater to make paper.

What is Combat Paper used for?

War veterans use the process of making Combat Paper as a means to reconcile their experiences while engaged in conflict and/or since they have returned to civilian life. The process allows veterans to reclaim their experiences from making art.

Is making Combat Paper legal?

The Combat Paper Project only pulps uniforms from inactive duty veterans. After being discharged veterans return to the civilian population and no longer are property of the military, so pulping the uniforms is not a problem.

Does Combat Paper disrespect active duty veterans?

Combat Paper is made in honor of all men and women involved in War. It is created as a means of dealing with the experiences, it offers hope and support to those who are currently involved in combat, in offering that when they return home there is an outlet for them to express their experiences and reclaim their lives.

How can paper be made using synthetic fibers?

Making paper requires the hydrogen bonding from plant cellulose fiber. The military uniform is comprised of a 50/50 cotton/nylon blend, resulting in a compromised hydrogen bond. To help the bond abaca cellulose fiber is added to the pulp. The abaca fiber, known for its high shrinkage, helps tighten the cotton/nylon bond to create a stronger paper.

What is the relationship between Iraq Veterans Against the War, Green Door Studio, People’s Republic of Paper?

Drew Cameron initiated the Combat Paper Project by working with IVAW members; one of the goals of the project is to raise awareness about the IVAW and the support it provides Veterans.

The Green Door Studio is the current east coast site host of the Combat Paper Project.

The People’s Republic of Paper is a Limited Liability Corporation that is dedicated to the spread of the knowledge of papermaking and the expansion of the Combat Paper Project.

What is the relationship between Combat Paper and Warrior Writers Workshops?

The Combat Paper Project grew out of the Remaking Sense Warrior Writers workshop hosted by the Green Door Studio in 2006.

Why is Combat Paper historically significant?

The knowledge of papermaking traveled west through the warrior. From its place of origin in China, papermaking traveled through the Islamic world and then to Europe through the Crusades.

Today, veterans are teaching one another papermaking as a means to address their experiences in war by making art and educating American society about the true costs of war.

How can I get involved with the Combat Paper Project?

The Combat Paper Project is ongoing and is always looking for supporters, financial, artistic and/or otherwise. If you are, or know of, a veteran who would be interested in participating through making paper or donating a uniform please contact:
