This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of the paper arts through the root of hand papermaking. In this course students will learn about materials, skills and techniques to make paper. Through hands on experience, the student will learn how to make paper from both natural and recycled fibers using technology from the comforts of their home. This course is for both art majors and non-majors, both beginning students and students with visual art experience.
Students in this course will explore a variety of paper arts techniques, such as eastern & western papermaking, paste paper, weaving, simple book binding, paper sculpting, papier-mâché, collage and simple printing processes. Students will investigate the historical and socio-economic significance of paper.

There are weekly reading, studio and workbook assignments, as well as online discussions. The workshops are used as time for critique, lecture and hands-on demonstrations.
