Artist Statement, 2007
Wylie Sofia Garcia believes artists have a duty to expand their creative horizons. As a painter, photographer, sculptor, and textile designer, she incorporates several mediums at once into her creations. She brought this theory of cross-media pollination to the E1 Studio Collective, which she co-founded and where she currently works in Burlington, Vermont.
In the past Garcia’s art has addressed formal issues of figure/ground spatial relationships. Her work questioned the dynamic of the human presence to the contextual meaning of the space portrayed. Her art has always possessed a self-referential quality that she is currently challenging in her newest series. Inspired by her own cross-cultural and economic background, she is incorporating elements of her Southern upbringing with new mixed media textile installations.
Wylie Sofia Garcia holds a BA in photography from the University of Chicago and is currently an MFA candidate at Massachusetts College of Art.
